We just submitted a manuscript for publication and chose to also offer it on the pre-print server BioRxiv.

Our paper resulted from a chance opportunity in 2022 that helped us discover microscopic, fibrillar projections on sculpin pectoral and pelvic fins. In the paper, we examined 4 species and discuss what we think these features are, how we think they might function, and why we think they expand the opportunities for thinking about underwater adhesion and bio-inspired designs.

This work was a collaborative project between my lab, the ULL Microscopy Center, and Dr. Austin Garner at Syracuse University. We hope it will be published soon in a peer-reviewed journal!

A) Tidepool sculpin and outline of the pectoral fin. B-C) Scanning Electron Microscopy of the bottom of the fin ray.
